Italian Civil Registry Historical Research

Historical civil records dating back as far as the mid-19th century, Italy does not have a national database in digital format. These old handwritten records are kept in each town hall (comune) where the civil status event occurred and was registered.

To obtain these certificates, “historical research” beforehand is necessary.  Once the town hall receives the official request for historical research together with the complete and correct information, the officers will check into the historical documentation archive page by page to make sure that the record does exist. This process could take some weeks or even months. Only after the town hall confirm that they have found the record, you can submit a request for obtaining the certificate.
