How to Obtain a Birth Certificate in Italy?

Under Italian law, vital records are maintained by the civil registry office (ufficio anagrafe e stato civile) in the town hall (comune) where the event occurred. There is no central, regional, or provincial office established which keeps such records. When applying for one of these certificates, the applicant must supply all relevant information, and submit the request written in the Italian language.

The Historical Birth Certificate

The historical birth certificate is instead a document that contains the historical birth status of an individual in Italy. Historical civil records dating back as far as the mid-19th century, Italy does not have a national database in digital format. These old handwritten records are kept in each town hall (comune) where the civil status event occurred and was registered.

To obtain this certificate, “historical research” beforehand is necessary.  Once the town hall receives the official request for historical research together with the complete and correct information, the officers will check into the historical documentation archive page by page to make sure that the record does exist. This process could take some weeks or even months. Only after the town hall confirm that they have found the record, you can submit a request for obtaining the certificate.
